So last night I had a sleep study. Weirdest medical experience ever in my lifetime.
I showed up at 9, the tech attached approximately 20+ wires all over my head and a few on my chest, a belt around my chest, my stomach & my right leg. One wire in particular sat below my nose and had two probes that went into my nose to measure my breathing. That was a very strange feeling. I'm sure it was very attractive...
Anyway, I was told to go sleep in a room with all of these wires sprouting from my head so they could figure out why I am constantly falling asleep & or tired all day.
While the tech was hooking me up, she asked me a lot of questions about my constant fatigue and came to the conclusion that I could very possibly be narcoleptic. Joy.
So to bed I went, trying ever so carefully not to screw up the intricate wiring on my head and to not roll onto my stomach. (I like to sleep in what I refer to as the starfish, on my stomach, completely stretched out in a weird position.) For a few minutes I thought my anxiety was going to keep me from getting to sleep, which is something I never have problems with. (It also didn't help that the other woman there for a sleep study talked ever so loudly on her cell phone until the early hours of the morning.)
I can sleep anywhere, anytime.
After a few minutes of watching FNC I fell asleep...
I woke up throughout the night as usual. Once to turn the TV off, once so the tech could reattach the nose wire, and again to check my phone to make sure I wasn't late. And lots of vivid & crazy dreams, also part of my normal sleep routine. At least I didn't have a falling dream or one where I couldn't move, I really hate those.
At 5:30 the tech woke me, pulled the wires off and sent me home. She told me that it did not appear that I have sleep apnea. (Thank God!) But it will take a week before the doctor can tell me what they learned from my sleep study. (I would hate to know how long it would take with socialized medicine.)
So this morning I read the Wikipedia article on narcolepsy. And I fell asleep reading it.
Maybe that's a sign...
SO let's do a quick summary -
My blood work from the other week checked out normal, so I don't have a gimp thyroid or something weird going on there.
I apparently don't suffer from sleep apnea.
So the last thing on the short list the doctor made is Narcolepsy.
So either I'm that or I'm crazy.
(I'm leaning towards crazy.)
