Vroom

It is time for me to start shopping for a new car. I've run the numbers and come up with what I think I will have in cash to work with.
I have been debating whether or not I want to try to get financing on top of what I have, no more than $8k bc I don't like car notes.
But I think I've decided against that whole mess since I want to go back to school. I rather not have the burden of a note while working and going to school. The past two years have taught me priceless lessons while juggling all my bills and a car note.
Now, I love my car. I'm sure that's obvious since it is my THIRD grand prix. It has all these luxury features like heads up display, leather, steering wheel radio controls, seat heaters, and other things that spoil me.
But I agreed with my mother and my sister last year that I would sell it to them this spring so my sister could have a *good* car that we won't have any worries about. So I need to start looking for myself a replacement obviously.

Tonight, I've been browsing around and coming up with ideas.
Before I totally wrote off the idea of financing I had decided I wanted either another grand prix, a ford 500, or a dodge charger.
But now, I have less money to work with and I am trying to be careful about what I consider.
So far I have found a lot of Hyundai and Mazda's in my price range that are pretty clean with low mileage. As much as I love owning an American car, I think this time I am going to have to forefit my support for the big 3 and suck it up.
However, I will never own another Honda after the accord I had. (It tried to kill me.)

So I would appreciate any words of wisdom, insider knowledge, or suggestions.

well, i've always loved my honda, but if yours tried to kill you, i can understand your unwillingness to go with honda again. i, for one, am a big fan of japanese automotive engineering (my big 3 are honda, toyota and mazda). they make safe, reliable cars with better fuel economy than almost every domestic car. i have a friend who swears by his hyundai. hyundai makes good cars, too. and if you buy a new one, you get that 10 year 100,000 mile warranty, which is amazing. maybe the warranty is transferable so even if you buy one used you still get it, or something close to it. my primary consideration is always cost of ownership. ownership cost includes not only purchase price, but fuel and repair/maintenance costs, as well (and other stuff, too). (this site can estimate the cost for you: http://www.edmunds.com/apps/cto/CTOintroController). if you have a car which is cheap to buy, gets great gas mileage and never breaks, you've found yourself a winner. chances are though, you won't find all three unless you get quite lucky. toyota, honda, nissan, mazda, hyundai all make reliable cars with good fuel economy but they tend to be more expensive up front than their domestic counter parts. however, the cost of owning a camry or an accord is the same or less than the cost of owning the equivalent ford or GM car (whatever those are now). for example, owning an '03 camry 4 door v6 for 5 years costs 30K while owning an '03 taurus 4 door v6 for the same time period costs 35K. so, my advice, look at total cost of ownership (TCO) when you've narrowed it down to the 2 or 3 cars you really like.

and if you get a chance, test drive a nissan 350Z. drive it like you just robbed a bank and you're 200 miles from the border with the feds hot on your tail. change lanes as fast as you can, see how fast you can go from 0-90 and then go 90-0 as fast as you can.

speaking of acceleration, i think hyundai sells a car which goes 0-60 faster than a porsche boxter. test drive that car if you can. the genesis. 0-60 in under 6 seconds. 375 HP. probably gets terrible mileage. it does, 18 city, 27 highway. pitiful.

good luck on the car hunt!
